Wisdom Workshop Project

A collaboration with Joni Kimoto, Lauren Yoshiko Terry, and Kapiolani Lee

Wisdom Workshops is a series of multigenerational, hands-on workshops partnering small businesses, history organizations, and elders and aunties in sharing histories and traditions of different themes in Old Town Portland. Led by BIPOC matriarchs, patriarchs, and elders from com

munities with ties to the neighborhood, the gatherings offer a chance to center underrepresented histories, share skills and stories across different cultures and ages, and utilize making as a catalyst for creating new community.

Recognizing BIPOC elders as cultural workers, bearers of wisdom, and pioneers in sustainability- this project aims to recognize the rich history of marginalized groups building community in Old Town and beyond.

This project takes inspiration from the radical invitation found in communal kitchens- where an active role is found for even the clumsiest of hands, and how organic story share conjures a mix of retellings/history/myth in which past and future find connections. How might newcomers become collaborators in community healing?
